ABOUT US

We travel Japan to meet its makers.

KNOT & MILE goes looking for the people across Japan who still make things by hand — and brings their work, and their stories, to you.

It starts at the workshop door

Some of our best memories of Japan aren’t of temples or famous views. They’re of a workshop door left open, a maker looking up from the bench, and a conversation that runs longer than we planned.

We’ve spent time with washi papermakers, with farmers who grow by the seasons, and with brewers in old sake breweries. We visit their shops and workrooms and ask them about their work. Those hours have become the part of the trip we remember most.

Pick up a piece in the place where it was made, talk with the person who made it, and you can feel something you’ll never get from a catalog: the hand and the heart behind it.

What we want to share

Good things we found on the road. Things we’ve used ourselves and genuinely love. We want to bring them to you along with the stories of the people who made them. That’s why KNOT & MILE exists.

The name

KNOT is a tie — between the person who makes a thing and the person who uses it.

MILEis the distance we’re willing to go to find them.

Together, they’re how we think about our work: connecting the dots across the globe.
